The small, pretty North Yorkshire village of Newton-on-Ouse is located in the Hambleton district of the county some 11 kilometres north-west of York. The village was mentioned in the Domesday Book when it was known as Neuuetone. In the middle of the 19th century the village hosted a series of race meetings, beginning on Wednesday 27th May 1863. The course was close to the banks of the Ouse and could be viewed on both sides of the river. At the meeting on Wednesday 18th May 1864 there was a 3 race card which included the Newton Saddle won by Miss Taft, and the Newton Bridle won by Topsy. The following year, on Wednesday 7th June 1865, the feature Silver Cup was won by Mr Collin’s Polly. |
